Johnathan Barker decided it was time for him to change his life by finding a job after having had time to reflect on the direction he wanted to take with his future. While Johnathan had some of the desired skills he lacked some such as customer service and communication skills for a minimum of 6 months.
Connecting with the Arkansas Workforce Center in Conway, in hopes of finding assistance in obtaining employment, he enrolled in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Youth Program in September 2019. As a result, Ashlee Ennis, Career Consultant at the Arkansas Workforce Center in Conway, helped Johnathan to learn the skills to become an asset for himself and potential employers.
He engaged in the Career Preparation Training Activity and learned skills like Resume Building, Interviewing Skills Training, and Dressing for Success prior to obtaining a job assignment. He participated in the Work Experience Program after completing these tasks, where he obtained helpful work experience at a nearby worksite, the Bat Cave in Conway, as a Stock Clerk.
Transportation, sadly, became a challenge and he could not get to work every day. Multiple worksite partners were contacted by the one-stop manger and Whit Davis Lumber Plus welcomed Johnathan as a stock clerk to continue helping him grow and learn more job skills closer to home.
As a result, he was able to develop excellent work skills and became a valued member of his crew, which enabled him to get his first full-time job at Walmart.
